Leichhardt Admin Building Gets Green Light

Leichhardt Municipal Council has voted unanimously to proceed with the two-story extension of the Administration Building after weeks of pressure from employees and the community.

Following a campaign by USU members and the community that commenced late last year Leichhardt Council approved the building in front of 30 employees.

The decision follows a hard fought campaign from employees who have been working out of makeshift offices for the past 17 years.

USU organiser Peter Kelly said it was a great win for the workers, and the community would reap the benefits of finally having adequate accommodation and meeting space for councillors, management, workers and visitors.

“There was some concern that councillors would only choose to build one storey, which would have been totally inadequate for the needs of council and the employees. This is a great win for the community too, who have got behind this project and supported workers in their struggle to have their voices heard."

"The USU would like to thank USU members and their families and members of the community who supported the campaign and braved the winter nights to attend rallies in support of the new facility," said Peter Kelly. "We would also like to thank those Councillors who supported the proposal from the beginning."
