USU to Canberra: Hands off Our Award

By Ben Kruse
USU General Secretary
Aug 28, 2009

In May a USU delegation of Senior Officials and elected representatives led by General Secretary Ben Kruse and Union President Steve Birney met with Government representatives in Canberra to lobby for Local Government to be excluded from the Federal Modern Award system.

Taking it to the top: USU Northern Manager Stephen Hughes, Marrickville Childcare Delegate Tanya Barton, USU President Stephen Birney, USU General Secretary Ben Kruse and USU Water Delegate Upper Lachlan Council David Scott

USU officials and delegates met with Senators and MPs to remind them of pre-election promises made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd about this issue and to highlight the current problems faced in the Local Government water industry with the proposed corporatisation of Local Government services.

Immediate Threat to Council Corporations and Associated Entities
The increasing trend towards the establishment of council owned corporations and entities such as strategic alliances and Regional Organisations of Councils (ROCS) places many workers under immediate threat of Modern Award coverage unless the federal government also excludes council corporations and associated entities from the federal Modern Award. This is a looming threat for members engaged in regional water services whose roles are under review through the State Government Water Inquiry.

The USU has urged the federal government to include all such entities in the excision provisions.

This meeting was an excellent opportunity for senior government representatives to hear from the USU leadership team and USU workplace delegates whose members are directly affected by the federal industrial relations changes.
