Alarm Bells Ringing on Electricity Sale

By Ben Kruse
USU General Secretary
Oct 29, 2009

Concerns from business groups about the State Government's planned sale of electricity assets are a clear sign that the process should be stopped, according to the United Services Union (USU).

USU General Secretary Ben Kruse today said the Government's plans would cause job losses in regional communities.

"Electricity retailers employ thousands of people in rural and regional NSW, and job losses in this sector will have a major economic impact on local communities around the State.

"And now the business community has now debunked the myth that the Government's plans will bring in a windfall for Treasury.

"It's now clear that the sale of electricity assets will be a case of 'all pain for no gain'."

Mr Kruse said the State Government should abandon the planned sale before it became another embarrassing debacle.

"Nathan Rees thought he would hear cash registers ringing when he sold off the state's electricity assets.

"But right know he’s hearing alarm bells, and they are getting louder by the day."
