On Thursday 28 October 2009, USU General Secretary, Ben Kruse and
Kempsey Shire Council General Manager, David Rawlings signed off on, “A
Joint Statement on Workplace Bullying and Harassment”.
USU Regional Organiser Narelle Rich sees this as a positive step at a Council where the ingrained culture of bullying and harassment had been allowed to go unchecked for too long.
“David Rawlings has listened to staff and the Union, he has implemented training on the importance of recognising bullying and harassing behaviours. David assures me his door is always open to staff to discuss issues that they have,” said Narelle.
“Our members need to have confidence in a system where complaints of bullying and harassment will be dealt with,” Narelle said. Council management and the Union believe that all employees are entitled to work in an environment in which they can enjoy their work and the relationship with their colleagues, free from harassment of any kind.
Both parties expect this policy to be followed consistently across the Kempsey Shire Council workforce, including contractors and volunteers. The USU thanks members and delegates for their hard work in making sure this important agreement was signed.
WORKPLACE HARASSMENT means offensive, abusive, belittling or threatening comments and/or behaviour which is unwelcome and unsolicited. Harassment can be behaviour and/or comments related to a person’s race, sex, sexual preference, disability, or age. Harassment usually involves repeated behaviour; however it can also consist of a single act.
