Hurstville Council Bullying Cleansing Crew into Changing their Rosters!

By Siobhan Callinan
USU Organiser
Jun 5, 2010

The Union has concerns with the changes proposed by Council to the Large Mechanical Sweeper roster.  When Council originally requested that our members changed their roster two reasons were put forward;

  • Council had concerns for OHS of drivers finishing alone; and
  • Council did not operationally require an afternoon shift sweeper.

The Union and members devised a roster which met these criteria.
This reasonable proposal has since been utterly rejected by Council without explanation and a direction given to members to choose either a 3am or 4am starting time, a choice which will force them into working an extra weekend without any extra money.

The Award says in Clause 16 Hours of Work D Facilitative Provisions

(i)      An employee's commencement and / or finishing times may be altered by agreement. Such an agreement must be in writing and must be genuine with no compulsion to agree.

Your Agreement says:

(iii)    Any amendment(s) to the roster must be made after consultation and agreement between HCC, the Union and the employees in the Cleansing unit.
 Also ... the Union and Council have agreed on inclusions in the Agreement only to have this rejected at a later date. Items in the Log of Claims such as having start and finish times included in the agreement and the base level of workers have been discussed and agreed upon on numerous occasions only to be rejected at the next meeting.

The Union believes Council is not negotiating in good faith!

What do we want?
We want Council to meet again to negotiate the remaining issues without going back on agreements the way they have been!
