PARRAMATTA CITY COUNCIL: CARPARK DEBACLE - COUNCIL JUMPS THE GUN

By Adam Jacka
USU Industrial Officer
Jun 10, 2010

Council has released its draft car park policy to all staff and it appears the carpark debacle continues.

The Union met with Council at the Local Government Shire Association (LGSA) office in Sydney on Tuesday 1 June 2010 to discuss a long list of issues which included car parking arrangements for employees at Parramatta City Council following the redevelopment of the Civic Place Precinct.

At the meeting held on 1 June 2010 no agreement was reached between the Union and Council regarding car parking arrangements.

In fact it was both the Council and Union’s understanding that there would be approximately 170 claims regarding car parking arrangements and the claims would all be worked through before any arrangements would be entered into.

Council committed to provide feedback to the Union by Wednesday 16 June 2010 relating to the possible claims of affected employees for loss of free car parking.

It is strange that Council distributed a draft policy on Wednesday 9 June 2010 that includes transitional arrangements for affected employees before they were to provide feedback to the Union on 16 June 2010.

Employees have also raised numerous safety concerns that have yet to be properly investigated.

There is no agreement on any arrangements and Council has jumped the gun!

The Union advises that employees should not accept the draft policy until this dispute is resolved which may include the assistance of the NSW Industrial Relations Commission.
