Campaign Continues to Protect Members

By John Blacklock

The USU has developed a campaign to fight for your rights at work and a fair wage rise across local government.

Another council signs up to protect their employees: USU Organisers John Blacklock and Ian Haywood with Great Lakes Council General Manager Keith O’Leary and Human Resources Officer Graeme Frappell and Delegates Noel Ford and Glenn Tyndall following the signing of the Referral Agreement.

Councils and the USU can agree to pay general wage rises by using a Protection Agreement - they do not need to implement WorkChoices.

The USU has taken this campaign directly to local governments, with USU General Secretary Ben Kruse meeting with members and council officials right across NSW.

It is also important that workers are protected from unfair dismissal and have access to the NSW Industrial Relations Commission. Importantly, eighty six councils have chosen to protect their workers with a Referral Agreement.

The USU is also defending the State Award and has launched an application for a general wage rise through the NSW Industrial Relations Commission.

However given the attack made by WorkChoices on the State Award, the USU needs to take action at every local government workplace to fight for decent wage rises and to protect basic conditions of employment.

This is why the USU Protect 07 Campaign is so important. The USU will continue to campaign against the application of the Howard Government’s workplace laws.
