Victory for Referral Agreement

By Wayne Moody
USU Organiser
Jun 25, 2007

The USU conducted numerous meetings with members and Management at Burwood Council to reach agreement to sign a Referral and Unfair Dismissal Agreement.

Referral agreements are one way that USU members can be protected from the attack on conditions and collective bargaining rights associated with the Howard Government's WorkChoices legislation.

With the final wage increase under the Local Government (State) Award paid on 1 November 2006 (a 3% increase) the challenge for local government workers as we move into the second half of 2007 will be to extend the referral agreement and the Local Government (State) Award into the future to ensure continuing access to conciliation and arbitration and wage increase.

USU local delegates are to be congratulated for their efforts in obtaining supporting petitions from members as part of the campaign.

During negotiations the USU has confirmed with Council that we are committed to the discussion and settlement of disputes at the local level, and we have reconfirmed this commitment.
