Fairfield Council Members Agree: Don't let Workchoices stop our wage increase

By Wayne Moody

On 28 June 2007, Fairfield City Council workers met with USU General Secretary Ben Kruse to discuss their concerns about WorkChoices.

Fairfield Council consented to the Union’s request for a paid meeting of two hours and a good mix of two hundred wages, salary, child care and library workers turned up to hear about their working future.

Fairfield Council workers were informed about the pitfalls of the Workchoices legislation and expressed concern about penalty rates, sick leave, maternity leave and wages and not having union representation.

USU Campaign for the Future
The workers were also informed that the USU would be running a state wide campaign to secure a pay rise for all Council employees in the form of a Council Agreement to take effect on 1 November 2007, the traditional date for an Award increase.

Members voted unanimously calling on the USU to commence negotiations for a November 2007 wage increase.

This meeting demonstrated that all staff are united in the common goal of working together for a good working environment. The strong network of dedicated and hardworking Union delegates assured that this meeting was a success.
