Fairfield Outdoor Staff Must Get A Fair Go

By Marea Wilson
USU Industrial Officer
Sep 1, 2007

Following the long awaited introduction of a Salary System for Indoor staff at Fairfield Council, USU members are demanding that a new equitable system be created for Outdoor workers.

Council and USU officials and delegates have been working together to create the new salary system. Council currently uses the Mercer CED system however the union, delegates and members believe the system is not fair to outdoor workers.

USU action on entry level inequity
The Union wrote to Council on 12 March 2007 to request an explanation for the difference of $2701 between Level A (entry level in the outdoor system) and Grade 1 (entry level for the indoor system).

Council claims us that all Level A positions scored less on the Mercer system than all Grade 1 positions however will not show the Union the figures.  THE UNION AND DELEGATES ASK WHY.

In a united front members unanimously passed the following motion at the June 28 mass meeting: "That the proposed Transitional Arrangements under the Salary System for Outdoor staff be scrapped and that the rates be assessed similar to the method used for indoor staff.”

Council management informed the Union that as the Mercer CED system was used to evaluate both systems, Council need take no further action.

The USU does not believe this is fair and as Council will not release figures believes the system to be disadvantageous to outdoor workers

The matter is listed for compulsory conference on 28 August 2007 and the Union looks forward to the opportunity to discuss these important issues before a neutral arbiter. Please check the website for updates.
