KU Signs a Better Deal for Workers

By Julie Griffiths
A/g USU Manager C&A
Apr 9, 2008

After considering the Work Choice Industrial Relations Legislation, it was agreed by both parties - the USU and the KU Children's Services - that the best mechanism to secure future wage increases and above all to lock in employment conditions was to negotiate a union collective agreement.

On the 12th December 2007 members voted in favour of the draft agreement.  The new agreement incorporated wage increases and enhancements to the existing conditions of employment in the NSW Clerical & Administrative Employees State Award (NAPSA) which were under threat by the WorkChoices legislation.

The original intent of the agreement was to give flexibility and permanency to those staff who have been employed by KU Children's Services as clerical staff in services for long periods of time as casuals. Management agreed to offer to all staff the opportunity to either stay as casual or move to Permanent part time with no compulsion to accept the offer.

The United Services Union negotiated salary increases over the life of the 3 year agreement effective from the date of lodgement of the agreement with the Employment Advocate on the 21st December 2007.

Staff will receive $20.00 per week from the date of signing and a further two increases on 1 November 2008 and 1 November 2009. Other benefits include:
  • Staff who acrue RDO’s may cash out accrued hours once per annum
  • 10 Days sick leave per annum
  • Paid Maternity leave up to six weeks depending on years of service
  • All services to be provided a copy of the Collective Agreement
  • Formulation of a Consultative Committee
  • Period of Notice is 2 weeks
  • Probationary period of 3 months
