Sydney City Council: What's a Council Worker Worth?

Your delegates met recently to discuss the City of Sydney Council Employees' pay increase for the year 2008/09 due in July.

Your Union Delegates have agreed that we should pursue a similar arrangement to last years pay increase and then decided to conduct a survey of Union members on the proposed arrangement for the 2008 pay increase.

The results of the survey are:

DO YOU AGREE WITH THE PROPOSAL?    

92% of staff surveyed agreed.

IF YES, WHAT PERCENTAGE PAY INCREASE WOULD YOU WANT?

66% of staff surveyed wanted an increase of 6% or greater.

This pay claim is acceptable given that:

  • Petrol prices are 18.9 per cent higher than a year ago.
  • Food prices are 5.7 per cent higher.
  • Electricity is 10.5 per cent more expensive.
  • Bank fees are up by 7.6 per cent.
  • Rent is up 7.1 per cent.
  • Health and education costs are both up by more than 4 per cent.

What happened last year?
Council and the USU agreed on preserving current terms and conditions of employment and granted a 4% pay increase.

What’s different this year?
The remnants of Howard’s WorkChoices still remain as a cloud over Local Government as it is still unclear on whether Local Government resides in the NSW Industrial Relations or the Federal Industrial Relations Systems.
