Newcastle Permanent Building Society: SURVEY REVEALS BUILDING SOCIETY MEMBERS WORKING LONGER HOURS

By Robert Potter

Aug 1, 2008

Staff at Newcastle Permanent Building Society, recently voted the No 1 Building Society in Australia (Money magazine-Consumer Finance Awards 2008), have long felt the amount of unpaid time they give their employer is becoming an expected part of the job.

This perception was presented to Management who requested data to back up the Union’s and members claims.

A survey was developed by USU officials Paul Sansom and Jodie Harrison with the assistance of delegates Lee Brossmann and Helen Loxley and distributed to staff. The results are shown at right.

The results show approximately 90% of respondents worked more than their 38 hours a week on a regular basis, with the majority of these not being compensated by either overtime or time off in lieu.

This is clearly unacceptable.

Our survey also revealed that the period of notice required to take annual leave can be as long as 18 months-2 years (dependant on the demand).

USU officials and delegates will be meeting with Management to discuss the implementation of strategies that will ensure staff are not working excessive hours, are not working unpaid hours and can access their full annual leave entitlements within a reasonable period.
