Ambulance Service Members: FINALLY SOME LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

By Paul Sansom
USU Organiser
Nov 1, 2008

USU MEMBERS employed by the Ambulance Service of NSW in the Sydney and Northern (Newcastle) Operations Centres have recently received the news they have been longing to hear.

"Extra staff are on the way."

The USU has been campaigning for staffing improvements in both centres for over 12 months and after numerous hearings at the Industrial Relations Commission the Service has agreed to abide by Justice Boland’s recommendations.

Both centres will see improvements in staffing within the next month. Justice Boland’s recommendations from May and August 2008 mean the following:

Sydney Operations Centre- one extra full time equivalent call taker 24 hours 7 days a week plus one extra call taker from 0700-2100 hours seven days a week

Northern Operations Centre- one extra full time equivalent call taker 24 hours 7 days a week plus one extra call taker 1600-2400 hours 7 days a week

This should reduce the burden on existing staff of having to work regular and potentially dangerous amounts of overtime for extended periods of time.

The USU wishes to acknowledge the commitment shown by all Operations Centre staff during this difficult time in ensuring the public of NSW had the best possible opportunity to have their emergency calls attended to in a timely fashion.

In particular we wish to thank your delegates Kath Woolfenden from Sydney and Denise Hough from Newcastle for their passionate and determined efforts in obtaining improvements for all members.

The role of call takers would have to be one of the most critical and stressful jobs within the USU's area of coverage.  The USU is pleased that Ambulance Service management has finally, after such a long argument, recognised your contribution to the health system in NSW.
