Energy Australia: USU Campaigns for Single Agreement

By Scott McNamara
USU Energy Organiser
Dec 31, 2006

The United Services Union has joined forces with other energy unions to stop EnergyAustralia from using WorkChoices against our members.

Energy Organiser Scott McNamara: "Energy Australia should not be in a position to attempt to divide the unions in such a manner - however this is what WorkChoices
On Friday 21 October the USU and unions party to the agreement negotiations with Energy Australia attended a meeting to discuss the future of these negotiations. The USU and ETU both presented logs of claims to management and made our position clear - that only a combined union agreement would be negotiated.

Management made it clear they were intending to divide the unions and hold separate negotiations with them.

USU Organiser Scott McNamara outlined the history of the negotiations of the Agreement and the position put by management as a blatant use of the WorkChoices legislation.

"Energy Australia should not be in a position to attempt to divide the unions in such a manner," said Scott McNamara. "However, this is what WorkChoices is all about - dividing workers from their workmates in an attempt to force them to go it alone. We will not let them succeed"

The USU entered a common law agreement in an attempt to protect our members' conditions of employment from WorkChoices.

"It was not an attempt to allow EnergyAustralia to hold separate negotiations with the USU and attempt to divide and conquer," explained USU Manager Energy Paul Marzato.

"The USU is committed to a single bargining agreement to protect workers and it is our intention to hold only joint union meetings to send a strong message to management that the USU and its members are not going to let a State Owned Corporation use WorkChoices against its employees," said Paul Marzato.

MEMBERS OF ALL UNIONS SHOULD DENOUNCE ENERGY AUSTRALIA’S POSITION AND SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR A SINGLE AGREEMENT!
