Doctor's Appointments - your job and your rights

By Jodie Harrison
USU Organiser
Jun 25, 2009

Some members have recently been telling us that their employer has insisted on being present during doctor's appointments.  The employer has tried to justify this by saying that it's necessary as part of a workers' compensation claim, or just as a "return to work" appointment after a period of illness which has been unrelated to their work.

It is between your doctor and you whether you let someone else into your appointment.  Some employers might be truly trying to help in the process of getting you back to a safe workplace.  Some employers however might be just trying to be mischievous.  So you should discuss it with your doctor and both you and your doctor should be comfortable before letting your employer or employer’s insurance company into the room.

It’s worthwhile remembering that in some circumstances (for example, workers compensation claims) your employer can ask for a written report from your doctor, but you must agree to allow your doctor to release your medical information before this can happen.

Contact your local USU delegate or USU Organiser for more information or help.  You can also call the USU’s Support Team on 1300 136 604.
