NIB Health Funds: How Much Am I Worth?

By Jodie Harrison

Aug 26, 2009

That's the question NIB members should be asking themselves. The union and staff representatives had hoped to bring you good news after the meeting with Management held on August 21, 2009.

Unfortunately, we can't.

The proposal presented to Management on that
day was:

Salary increases of:
2.75% p.a. salary increase from 1/10/09 (down from 3% last meeting)
3.25% p.a. or CPI whichever is higher from 1/10/10 (no change)
3.25% p.a. or CPI whichever is higher from 1/10/11 (no change)
Redundancy provisions to remain as per the current agreement – (down from the claim of a maximum of 50 weeks for long term employees)(this was in light of the current redeployment policy available.)

This proposal is more than reasonable allowing for the current economic climate and lower CPI but also considering management’s optimism for NIB’s performance over the next few years.

In an effort to reach agreement the Staff committee even offered to:

drop the term of the agreement to two years in light of management's unwillingness to lock in a set pay increase for the third year and
seek mediation from an independent body to assist in finding a mutually agreeable package

Management flatly rejected both the pay increase offer and these suggestions stating that they could not justify a higher pay increase to the shareholders of NIB and the NIB budget for this year was based on a lower increase

But they seem to have forgotten they need to justify their position to you! Legislation requires NIB to have the agreement of the majority of employees covered by the agreement.

So How Much are you Worth?

You Union and the Staff Committee are determined to achieve a fair and equitable outcome for you and we simply do not feel Management’s current offer is acceptable.

The USU urges its members to tell NIB management its offer is not good enough and demand a better deal.

SO how do we do that?...

Send an email to survey@usu.org.au demanding management negotiate further with your elected representatives.

Only by all employees standing strong together saying “It’s just not good enough!” will NIB realise they need to offer you a better deal.  Your Union and your staff representatives think you are worth it!
