Phillip Smyth Educational Scholarships

The USU has allocated funds to honour the contribution to the Union, and in particular the education and training of Union members, by our esteemed colleague and friend the late Phil Smyth.

It has been resolved to distribute these funds for the educational assistance of members and their families among the following four categories:

Category 1. Secondary Education
Higher School Certificate - to assist low income operational band employees by providing financial support for their child undertaking the HSC. The support would be payable directly to the educational facility for fees or text books.

Category 2. Tertiary Education
Industrial Relations Studies or Local Government Foundation Studies Operational Certificates. The contribution will be towards text expenses allowing members to undertake industrial Relations Courses at TAFE or in providing access for members to undertake modules in the Operational Certificates.

Category 3. University Studies
A contribution towards entrance fees for those members completing a semester of study or continuing their professional education program. Preference will be given to applications that identify a leaning towards industrial or political study.

Category 4. Scholarships

Enquiries should be made to USU Manager Admin on (02) 9265 8211. Initial enquiries will need to identify:

i) membership number
ii) category number
iii) applicant and relationship to member
iv) amount of subsidy or part subsidy sought
v) identification of course

An application form can be downloaded here.

Please note that applications for 2009 scholarships close 30 January 2009.

Members should check their Union journal for future closing dates.
