Rights must be protected Dec 12, 2008: While the USU welcomes the announcement from the Federal Government that the new national system of workplace bargaining will be backed by an industrial umpire with strong powers to protect workers we still believe the Government has to take further steps to protect hard working Australian families.

Members Unite For Chubb Security Services Agreement Dec 12, 2008: On 15th October 2008 USU General Secretary Ben Kruse and Organiser Ted
Tamplin met with Chubb delegate and management to sign off the new
Collective Agreement at Chubb Security Services.

NEW DRIVER FATIGUE LAWS Dec 12, 2008: From 29th September 2008, the Roads Transport (General) Regulation 2005
contained new provisions relating to the management of heavy vehicle
driver fatigue. Members should be aware of these provisions (and the
exemptions) to ensure compliance.

Unity Wins at Cootamundra Picnic Dec 12, 2008: On Friday October 10, 2008 Cootamundra Shire Council held their Picnic
Day. The weather was perfect as was the attendance. Graeme Kelly
Manager of the USU Southern Office, Andrew Johnston from the Southern
Office Organising Unit & Murray Branch Organiser Tyrone Lynch were
invited to attend the picnic day to meet the members and staff of
Cootamundra Shire Council.

Save jobs for disabled workers at Wollongong Radio Doctors Dec 12, 2008: The United Services Union, along with the assistance of the South Coast
Labor Council, has been working very hard to develop some proposals for
Wollongong Radio Doctors to keep their call centre running and
employing workers with disabilities.

NSW Council Workers Protected Dec 12, 2008: Local Government workers rights have been protected following the passage of the Local Government Amendment (Legal Status) Bill through the NSW Parliament. The decision means that members’ rights are protected under the State Award, improving the level of certainty about dispute resolution, unfair dismissal and employment protection legislation.

Federated Clerks Union: History Book Launched Dec 12, 2008: On December 3rd former Premier and Labor Council Secretary Barrie Unsworth launched The Clerks - A History of the Federated Clerks Union in New South Wales which the tells the story of the Federated Clerks Union of Australia New South Wales Branch, founded as the United Clerks Union in 1907.

TABCORP management since March over a new collective agreement for
Phonetab operators.

Newcastle Newspapers: Wage Negotiations Commence Dec 12, 2008: The collective agreement at Newcastle Newspapers expires at the end of
this year. Unless a new one is negotiated, there will be no pay
increases or improvements to working conditions for clerical staff at
Newcastle Newspapers. The USU has commenced preliminary discussions
with Herald management about how the negotiations will be held.
