USU Commissions Super Review Dec 23, 2009: The USU has engaged specialist superannuation consultants KPMG to
conduct a review of the FuturePlus group of companies. In most cases
superannuation is the most important financial investment made by
members.

We're On Board Dec 23, 2009: The last installment of the 2007 award has now been paid. Workers at
councils across NSW received the 3.2% ($22 minimum) payable from the
first full pay period on or after 1 November 2009.

Union wins exemption rate removal from modern Clerks Award Dec 23, 2009: After a campaign of 11 months duration, your national union, the ASU has succeeded in having the exemption rate removed from the modern Clerks Award due to come into operation from the 1 January 2010.

FAIR WORK REFERRALS BILL: An Important Step In Protecting Local Government Industrial Rights Dec 23, 2009: The Rudd Government has honoured its commitment to keep local government in the State industrial relations system. The introduction of the Fair Work Amendment (State Referrals and Other Measures) Bill into the Commonwealth parliament marks an important step in securing industrial rights for council workers in NSW.

Lifeguards Keep Identity Dec 23, 2009: At the recent NSW Local Government Conference a motion from Gosford
Council to “develop a strategy to ensure that Professional and
Volunteer lifeguards have consistency in uniforms and therefore offer
simplicity in recognition of lifeguards and lifesavers by those members
of the public who may not be familiar with the two organisations” was
defeated.

Members on Board for Blacktown Council EA09 Dec 23, 2009: On Wednesday 11 November 2009, the Union received Council’s response to
the key campaign points and items for the Enterprise Agreement 2009.
The union has held meetings with Section spokespersons and at the time
of going to print has held mass meetings with members to respond to any
enquiries from members.

USU Farewells Tireless Delegate Bob Kenny Dec 23, 2009: It is with great sadness that the Union bids farewell to Bob Kenny, a
Delegate at Coffs Harbour City Council. Bob was a contact for the
salaried staff since the early 1990’s; was elected to the delegate’s
role in 1994 and has been the salaried officer’s representative for
CHCC on the Northern Branch Committee of Management since May 1999.

Federal MPs meet with our ASU Airlines Delegation in ACT Dec 23, 2009: Recently up to 40 Members of Parliament met with our National ASU
Airlines Delegation in Canberra, ACT. The Delegation was made up with
delegates from the ASU in the Airlines industry and came from all over
Australia.

Gaye Rhodes: 38 years at Urana Shire Council Dec 23, 2009: Gaye commenced duties for the Urana Shire Council in 1964 at the age of
16 years, as the Secretary to the then Shire Clerk, Mr. Harry Hutton.
She left the Council to start a family in 1970 with her husband Sid and
they have two children. Gaye’s daughter, Lisa is currently a
Councillor on the Urana Shire Council

Hard Work Pays Off as Local Government Protected Dec 23, 2009: At the time of writing this report, news has only just been received confirming the Federal Government has reintroduced further amendments regarding referral powers of Industrial Relations responsibilities into Federal Parliament. This legislation is primarily to provide a mechanism for States to refer non incorporated private sector workers into the Federal System under modern awards or federal agreements, but also provides the legal mechanism for States to retain Local Government, and even more importantly, Local Government Corporations in the State IR System.

USU Secures Jobs Dec 23, 2009: The USU recently achieved the guarantee that all operational jobs at
the White Memorial Swimming Pool will remain under control of
Muswellbrook Shire Council. Council had initiated a process to review
current workplace practices and services. Several options were explored
and discussed by Council which could have led to operational jobs
outsourced or privatised.
