GETTING ON WITH THE JOB

USU WOMENS CONFERENCE 2010

REGISTER ONLINE HERE

The USU Women’s Conference is held every 2 years to assess developments made for women in key policy areas with particular focus on achievements. In 2010 the Union will hold their Women's Conference on 6th - 7th September at the Sutherland District Trade Union Club “Tradies”. (find out more)

The USU Women’s Conference 2010 will focus on developing the campaigns the USU needs to firmly set in place to get on with the job of achieving gender equity in the workplace.

The latest ABS statistics paint a grim picture for women. The mean weekly earnings of employees in all jobs in August 2009, was $995, an increase of $37 since August 2008. Mean weekly earnings in all jobs for men was $1,181 compared to $789 for women. The mean weekly earnings in the main job was higher for men than for women in every age group.

The end result of this, combined with the time women spend outside the paid workforce, is that retired men aged 55-64 have around 1.7 times the disposable weekly income of retired women in the same age group.

This statistic reminds us how far we still need to go in Australia to reach wage equity for women, including the importance of ensuring that a strong Paid Maternity Leave system is in place to allow women to be able to have a family without being punished in the paypacket. The USU has been at the fore with the fight for Paid Maternity Leave but we know we still have a long way to go.

We also know that pay equity must be obtained if women are to close the gap in wages.

During conference, delegates will be given the opportunity to develop direction & policy which will be put before annual conference for consideration and endorsement.

Awards: At each full Women's conference, two female USU delegates will be rewarded for their activism. Members are asked to nominate a USU member whose activism promotes women in the trade union movement and in the workplace. The Edna Ryan Award is for women delegates working in the local government or energy industries, and the Betty Spears Award is for women delegates in the clerical and administrative part of our membership.

All USU members are invited to consider nominating their local female delegate for one of these Awards. Nominations must be made no later than 20 August 2010.

At the Womens Conference, the USU awards one member the Edna Ryan Memorial Award. (about Edna Ryan)

At the Womens Conference, the USU awards one Clerical & Administrative Delegate the Betty Spears Award. (about Betty Spears)
