Ripping apart regional communities
“Destination 2036” is the O’Farrell Government’s vision for Local Government in NSW - it should be titled “Destination Disaster”.
In Regional NSW, Councils and other local authorities such as County Councils are often the biggest employers in the community.
Potential loss of jobs will further reduce population in rural communities and lead to fewer job opportunities in areas where regular (non-seasonal) work is scarce.
This will increase the difficulty of retaining workers and their families locally and increase the trend for people to relocate to coastal and metropolitan areas, risking the survival of many small towns.
Many employees will have to travel longer distances to work or even relocate to new homes.
Some workers may be forced to travel an additional 200km per day. This means increased fatigue, greater costs in fuel and more time away from families.
The O’Farrell Government’s Destination 2036 vision for Local Government can only serve to damage local communities and local infrastructure. It’s not good for the State! It’s not good for Regional NSW!
